In the grand scheme of things none of us, even the oldest among us, is really that old. Our personal time spans are brief and fleeting, but heritage never dies, and it has been with us since the beginning. I am not old, not even considering the grand scheme of things, but I already know that leaving a legacy is a difficult task. Men have suffered and spent themselves to leave them. Good heritage cannot exist without good men suffering to leave a legacy. And we thank our fathers for their suffering. Without them, we would not know what it means to live a life our grandsons would be proud of.

More than likely, it was when the 12 year old version of oursleves were told that, as proud as we were of our peach fuzz, it really needed to go. Dad might have been the one to tell us. He’s good at telling us hard things to hear, but that in the end are really good for us.

And if he was in tune with the finer things in life, he taught us how to prep our faces with a hot, soaked rag, how to soften the bristles of our brush in hot water, how to spread shaving cream or soap suds across our face (or upper lip) like an expert painter, how to grip a nice, heavy razor in our hand, how to shave with long, even strokes, and finally, how to splash on aftershave with the virtue of restraint.

But some of us didn’t get the proper “how to shave” talk. Maybe it’s time we caught up and made the morning shave one of the finer things in life.

Genevieve Moore Cheatham with her daughter, Nancee, 1923. She loved to visit her grandchildren on the weekends, always bringing grapes, lemon drops and sandwiches.

It has been said that mothers are the gatekeepers of culture, always with an eye tuned towards what is passing in and out, critiquing and assessing, taking what is good and blessing their children with it, hoping there is enough goodness to keep hearts grounded, contented, and unswayed by seduction. We are who we are, we value what we value, because generation after generation our mothers have been keeping watch. Whether with the stern and faithful wounds we desperately need, or with the consolation of being held tightly in her arms, which we need just as much, she has formed like a potter the tenderest affections of our hearts. And down the precarious descent of genealogy, upheld by grace, she has turned us always toward what is good. We have learned to long for it, and someday we might want it for ourselves as much as she has wished it for us. From now until we get there, and ever after, she deserves a thank you. -Jonathan Allston

There was a day when mass production was more about getting quality stuff to the masses, and less about the ability to make massive amounts of all things sans quality. In the 18th and 19th centuries, potters in Great Britain started producing Ironstone china to serve as a more durable, re-producable alternative to porcelain, and they did not skimp on good, solid quality. After all, it’s called stoneware, which means it’s made out of rock! And dinner tables the world over begged to stand beneath its weight.

It seems that through the 19th century Americans preferred the pure white Ironstone pieces. And it makes sense that we would opt for what was clean, strong, and classy, not to mention versatile enough to deck the rough wood of the farmhouse table and the soft elegance of the table-clothed dining room. Two centuries later, it is a special thing to share in a rich dining tradition with our predecessors, especially when we’re eating off the same plates.

Human beings are fascinating creatures, created with a craving for change and movement, while at the same time longing for tradition and stability that stands firm in the midst of the dynamic life we live. And somehow, the stability makes the change all the sweeter, and the change makes the stability all the stronger.

And then there are seasons, the cycles that bring change, but return us to heat and cold, blossoms and withering, beautiful leaves year after year. The earth brings us the old and the new simultaneously; it satisfies our desires, and that’s because we were made for this place, and it for us.

Sometimes it takes a walk in the woods to become reacquainted with the beauty of age and the beauty of youth, to be re-enamoured with this place we live in, and to celebrate the fact that so much of what we desire can be satisfied as long as we have the heart to receive the gifts we’ve been given.

And that, in a nutshell, is why our store exists–so that you can take a walk in the woods.

Where does the scent of lavender take you? To a Southwest sunset? To a field where you sit and feast on the beauty around you? To the comfort of a home that smelled richly of it? To the fragrance of a person you love?

You might not be able to put a finger on where exactly a smell will take your thoughts, but that is what scents do. They stir our memories of the past and our hopes for the future, both of which feel like nostalgia, like a longing for home.

The Los Poblanos Ranch in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has a storied past full of culture and farming and beauty. Home to an inn, a cultural retreat, and a strong heritage of experimental and organic farming, Los Poblanos began harvesting lavender on the ranch in 1999 for the purpose of crafting spa products. The dry climate that breathes life into the fertile soil of the ranch is ideal for the growing of lavender, the result of which is conscientiously made products that bring the scent of lavender to people around the country. Whether soap, lotion, or salve, the fragrance will take you somewhere very good.

Perhaps most of the people who breathe in the smell of Los Poblanos lavender have never been to the place it came from. Perhaps they’ve never seen the ranch beneath the rising sun or walked through the purple fields. But that may be the place they are transported to all the same. Maybe that’s what a scent is for: to take our thoughts to a home we’ve never actually been to. -Jonathan Allston

I’ve had the opportunity to drive by coffee farms in Kenya and watch the plants grow out of good earth and roll over green hills. I was thankful for that. This morning I ground some fresh coffee beans from Guatemala and brewed them to my liking while sunlight filtered through the green leaves that surround my house. I was thankful for that too. We recently got to visit Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Brooklyn, NY, and see firsthand how the link between production and consumption can bless the earth as much as her fruits bless us. Somehow, a knowledge of that link makes the coffee taste better. And that’s something to be thankful for too. Take a look at some pictures of our visit, and please consider this your invitation to try a little Stumptown and find one more thing to be thankful for.

It’s been said that people must be loved before they can be lovely. And, come to think of it, the same is true of chocolate. So, let me tell you a story. Two brothers bought a sail boat and started having adventures. They sailed to Madagascar, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. They bought exotic cacao from family farms and journeyed back to New York Harbor. They made chocolate with their friends in Brooklyn. They loved and nurtured every bean, turned the beans into chocolate bars, and hand-wrapped the bars in golden foil and ornamental paper. Then they sent their chocolate to We Took to the Woods, and you came in and ate some of it, and you knew once and for all and for good and forever that loved things become lovely—even chocolate. Mast Bros. Chocolate is available now at We Took to the Woods. This is a good story to be a part of.
